Sneak peek: Firemaking

RuneClick 2.6 is coming together, and the headline is a new skill: Firemaking. It is the oldest idea in the game, setting your logs alight, and it runs straight through skills you already have, your Woodcutting, your Farming, your Prayer. No date, as always. When it is ready, it ships. Here is an early look.

Firemaking

You burn logs for experience, and every log leaves its own ash behind. It climbs the full log ladder, from a modest oak campfire at level one up to a towering elder bonfire at level eighty, and every fire burns the true colour of its wood. Here are all six, going at once.

Now and then a fire spirit stirs in the embers and leaves you a small gift. And for anyone who tends enough fires, there is a new pet waiting at absurdly long odds: a Phoenix Chick that warms itself at every fire you light.

Ash feeds the farm

Burning is not busywork. The ash is the point. Rake it out of a fire and it works up into stronger compost, the low-tier oak, willow, and maple ash into Supercompost, and the hotter yew, magic, and elder ash into Ultracompost. The richer the ash, the less of it you need. Spread it at planting and your crops shrug off disease, live for extra harvests, and pay out bigger.

That closes a loop running the whole length of the game: chop the wood, burn it, spread the ash, grow more. Woodcutting has never had a bigger reason to keep swinging.

Sacred pyres and Prayer

There is a second thing to do with a good log. Treat one with Sacred Oil and light it as a pyre, and instead of ash it banks a Pyre Blessing. The next bones you bury spend that blessing for bonus Prayer experience, a small lift from an oak pyre and as much as double from an elder. Sacred Oil comes off the undead and demons you fight, or from the store, or brewed at the Herblore bench.

Because a good blessing is worth banking, the whole thing stays off until you ask for it. Flip a switch in Settings when you want your best pyre spent on your next bury, and leave it off when you would rather save it.

What you are chasing

The Phoenix Chick sits at the far end of the odds, the pet you chase for its own sake. For reaching ninety-nine there is a Firemaking Cape, and actually landing the bird pays out a second reward on top of it.
