Update 3.1.0

Polish update: selling in the shop, fewer clicks, a balance pass, new robes, an art pass and a Discord.

Vosk's notes, as posted on Steam (read them there). The story behind it, with clips: Update 3.1: The Polish Update.

3.1.0 is a polish update. No new skills this time. I went back over everything that's already in the game: selling, the number of clicks it takes to do common things, what the game tells you and when, a balance pass on the skills that never quite added up, some feedback for things that happened silently, and an art pass on the pieces that fell behind the rest.

RuneClick has a Discord

There's an official RuneClick Discord now. Come show off where your character lives on your desktop, brag about drops and 99s, and post bugs and ideas where they won't scroll away. I read all of it. Verify with Steam and the bot gives you a role for your total level that moves up as you train, and you can look up any item, monster or skill right in chat with /item, /monster and /skill. There's a Join the Discord button in Settings > Feedback, or head to voskgames.com/discord

Selling in the shop

  • The shop has a Buy / Sell switch at the top. Sell shows everything in your bank the merchant will buy, with the big shop icons, the price on each item and your bank's total value. Click an item to sell the amount picked on the quantity bar. The first sale of each item on a visit asks you to confirm.
  • Each section of the Sell tab has a Sell all button. It keeps your rare finds (anything from a rare drop table, or worth 5,000 gold or more each), the food in your auto-eat slots, the food and potions you have in use, whatever your current recipe uses, your selected spells' runes, and your equipped arrows, bolts and tar. It asks twice: once with the gold total, then once more naming what goes, since a sale can't be undone. Spare gear sells one click at a time.
  • The shop is now as wide as the bank and lays its buy sections out in two columns.

Fewer clicks

  • Picking a skill puts the skill grid and menu away and opens that skill's picker, with your last choice highlighted. Switching skill and recipe went from 6 clicks to 4.
  • The skill icon on the XP bar opens the skill grid, so it's 3 clicks from there.
  • When you run out of materials mid-craft, a row of buy buttons shows right under the recipe box on screen. It names what it buys and offers from 10 up to 50,000 more crafts' worth, showing the amounts you can afford. The big amounts ask for a second click, and the row goes away once you've bought. The recipe picker has Buy for 10 more and Buy for 50 more buttons too, whenever you're short of something the shop sells.
  • The Slayer console has a red button under your task that names your monster, like Fight Wolf. It closes the console, switches to the combat style you last used (Melee the first time) and targets the task monster. If you can't fight it yet, the button says why.
  • The Farming crop picker can plant your pick in every empty patch at once. Patches that already hold a crop are left alone.
  • Right-click any monster in the picker, locked ones included, to open its Guide page.
  • In Stats, clicking a skill trains it (the combat stats go to Melee) and right-clicking opens its Guide chapter.

The game tells you more

  • Recipe tooltips show the XP per craft, how many inputs it takes, what you have against what one craft needs, and how many you can make. That count also shows in the corner of every recipe you've unlocked, in red at 0.
  • Gathering tooltips show the XP per success, your chance with your level and gear, and the sell value.
  • Each skill's level shows in the corner of its icon on the skill grid.
  • Hovering the XP bar shows the XP left to the next level, how far through it you are, and roughly how many more of your current action that is.
  • A level-up names what it unlocked, like "New: Iron Ore." Up to three names, then "and N more".
  • When you run out of materials the game says so once ("You're out of Iron Ore.") instead of your character standing still. Smithing, Cooking, Crafting, Fletching, Runecraft, Prayer and Herblore each have an option in their picker, Make the next best thing I can, which switches you once to the best recipe at or below the one that ran out that you can still make. It never moves you up to a pricier recipe. It's off by default, saved per skill, and Restore Defaults leaves it alone.
  • Level-ups, rare drops, finished builds, finished Slayer tasks and a fire spirit's big gift can no longer be pushed off screen by a smaller message like "Burned!". Smaller messages wait their turn behind them.
  • Gear in the Equipment panel shows how it compares with what that loadout is wearing in the same slot, and a clear upgrade you can equip gets a green arrow.
  • Locked achievements show how far along you are, like "Progress: 3 / 5".
  • If the Agility coach you were training with was your best one, you move up to the new coach when it unlocks. A lower coach or the Trials picked on purpose stay picked.
  • Unlocking a Steam achievement now shows in game as well, since Steam's own popup may not draw over RuneClick.

Loadout hotkeys

  • Loadout hotkeys now use Ctrl+Alt+1 to 4 by default, so typing a number in chat or pressing a hotbar key in another game no longer swaps your gear. The keys you pick while rebinding are recorded with the modifiers you hold.
  • If you already turned hotkeys on or picked your own keys, they keep working exactly as before.
  • Restore Defaults now asks for a second click within 4 seconds, because it also resets your hotkeys.
  • The skilling HUD remembers whether you collapsed it.

New Magic robes

Magic's armour stopped at the Mystic robes at level 40. Three more sets continue it:

  • Sorcerer (Defence and Magic 50): crafted at Crafting 55, 57 and 60 from enchanted cloth, thread and chaos runes. Hat 10, robe 18, skirt 13 Defence.
  • Arcanist (Defence and Magic 60): a rare drop from the Chaos Druid and the Aberrant Spectre. Hat 13, robe 24, skirt 17 Defence.
  • Archmage (Defence and Magic 70): a rare drop from the Vampyre and the Chaos Elemental. Hat 17, robe 31, skirt 22 Defence.

Balance

  • Ranged: bows can be used sooner (Willow at 10, was 15; Maple 20, was 30; Yew 40, was 50; Magic 60, was 70), and Ranged gives about 14% more XP per point of damage, the same rate as Melee. It was the slowest combat skill to 99 by a wide margin. Crossbows follow the bows down: Iron 10, Steel 20, Mithril 40, Adamant 60 (were 15, 30, 50, 70).
  • Thieving: success climbs to its best within 10 levels of a mark's unlock instead of 25, so every new mark is worth moving to. Every mark's XP per steal is lower to match, so the time to 99 stays about the same. The Hero, the Rogues' Chest and the Elf pay fewer coins per steal (Hero 104 to 259, was 200 to 500; Chest 145 to 325, was 400 to 900; Elf 219 to 526, was 250 to 600) because you're caught far less often now, which would otherwise have doubled their gold per hour. Gold per hour at 99 is about where it was.
  • Cooking: Salmon, Lobster and Swordfish give more XP (620, was 584; 960, was 779; 1,155, was 908), so each new fish beats the last. Trout used to be the best XP from level 10 all the way to 80.
  • Smithing: forging now gives the same XP per input as smelting that metal. It gave roughly half.
  • Fletching: crossbows give the same XP per input as the shortbow you unlock at the same level. They gave about a quarter.
  • Agility: Trials III and IV give a little less XP than the best coach at the same level, as the Guide says (1,277 per circuit, was 1,591; 2,257, was 2,491). They gave more.
  • Magic: the bolt spells now hit harder than the strikes. Wind Bolt 10 (was 9), Water Bolt 11 (10), Earth Bolt 12 (11), Fire Bolt 13 (12), Wind Blast 15 (13).
  • Siphon heals 7 per combat input, up from 2.
  • Farming and Herblore: the rare seeds and herbs turn up far more often when you identify them. Thornstar seeds about 40 times as often, Stoutweed and Magic seeds 5 times, Yew seeds about 3 times, Maple, Coconut and Papaya Tree seeds about twice. Identified herbs give clean Thornstar 25 times as often and Stoutweed about 3 times.
  • The Giant Squirrel is about 6 times as likely as before and the Sproutling 4 times. The Sproutling can now also turn up when a tree finishes growing, not only on a harvest.
  • Enchanted Onyx Bolts drop in stacks of 10 to 15 from The Abyssal Lord and the Chaos Elemental. Cutting an onyx into bolt tips is gone: it turned a gem worth over 7 million into 15 bolts. Plain onyx bolts you already have can still be enchanted, and onyx bolt tips still sell. Neither counts toward the collection any more, since they can no longer be made.

Prices

  • Gem bolts and bolt tips are priced from what goes into them. Plain bolts: Topaz 10, Jade 13, Sapphire 29, Emerald 46, Ruby 91, Diamond 191. Enchanted: Topaz 11, Emerald 52, Ruby 105, Diamond 219. Onyx bolts are about 20,000 each. Bolt tips sell now; they sold for nothing.
  • Hide armour now sells in tier order in every slot. A Sabrehide helmet sold for less than a Studded one. Studded, Hard and Dragonhide pieces sell for less (Dragonhide body 140, was 1,100), and green dragonhide sells for 20, was 200.
  • The five salamanders sell for 12 to 43 each. They sold for nothing.

Achievements

  • Master Thief now takes 100,000 successful steals (was 10,000) and Mass Production 100,000 items made (was 10,000). Both took a few hours at most.
  • Dragon's Bite, Deep Caster and Hellforged say "Obtain" the tool instead of naming one boss, since each tool also comes as a rare version when you smith its Rune version.
  • Several descriptions now match what actually counts: Diamond in the Rough and Hidden Treasure count a diamond or an uncut gem from any source, Well-Rounded says it leaves out Ranged and Magic (it always did), Smoke Signal and Charcoal Chef count any burnt meal, Soft Step counts every hide set, and Soft Landing no longer calls the Baby Pufftail the only Hunter pet.
  • If you already have any of these, you keep them.

Feel

  • Monsters flash white when you hit them. It has its own switch in Settings, Enemy Hit Flash, on by default.
  • You and the monster fade back in after a respawn instead of popping in.
  • Mining rocks can take a small knock on each successful strike. Turn on Mining Rock Knock in Settings if you want it; it's off by default.
  • Hunter, Agility, Construction, Slayer and Spellcraft have their own ambient effects instead of the fireflies every other skill fell back to.
  • The Abyssal Lord and the Chaos Elemental take on a tint for the combat style of their current phase.
  • Killing a boss, finishing a Slayer task and finishing a build set off a celebration.
  • An enchanted bolt's special effect shows on screen when it goes off.
  • A diseased crop wilts in its patch.

Text

  • Hunter's trap and creature names match the items everywhere: Box Trap, Net and Rope, Clickling Net, Big Game, Root-Hogs.
  • Ashes no longer promise a Herblore use, and the Mystic robe no longer calls itself craftable.
  • A full pass over item, monster, spell and Guide text against how the game actually works. The main fixes: charmed jewellery's rare-find bonus applies to skilling rare finds, not monster drops; the herb seeds go in a herb patch; the Giant Squirrel turns up at the Agility trials; plain compost adds two harvests; the Dragon chestplate and legs each list their second monster; the Lesser Demon and the Terrorbird describe how they really attack (magic and ranged); the Basilisk's description matches what its stare does; the pyre tooltip says blessings work when turned on; and several "best" claims that were outranked are gone.
  • The Guide shows a boss's enraged max hit, and how hard a Slayer monster hits without its counter item. The Ravager's entry says every style needs its special weapon.
  • After an account reset, the message says the game will close and that you open it again to start fresh. It said it was restarting, but it only ever closed.
  • "Recovered 3 bolts" when you're using a crossbow, and "1 arrow" instead of "1 arrows".
  • Everything new or changed in this update is translated into all eight languages.

Art

  • New poses. Chiselling limestone and granite: you kneel and strike the stone, cream for limestone and grey for granite. Mixing and baking: bread and pastry dough, the pies, the battas, the fruit basket, the garden feast and milling flour stir a bowl, its contents in that recipe's colour (they used the frying pan). Fletching bolts: you fit the fletching to a short metal bolt in that bolt's metal, with the gem point on gem bolts (it borrowed the arrow pose). Your jewellery follows every new pose.
  • Agility, Hunter, Prayer, Spellcraft, Thieving and Attack are redrawn to match the original skill icons, and Settings and Stats in the menu are redrawn too.
  • The XP, double resource, rare find and gather bonus icons are small pictures (XP and double resource were the letters "xp" and "2x"), and they now show beside each bonus in the Equipment panel.
  • Gem cutting shows the gem you're working, each in its own colour. It showed the same pale green gem for everything.
  • Hunter creatures and the Cooking stove are drawn at their on-screen size, so their pixels stop shimmering as they move.
  • Farming: a grown herb is a full bed with blossoms in that herb's colour (they were one bright bush in 15 colours), grown rosemary grows out of its own bed, and wheat has its own first stage.
  • Construction: the Stone Altar and the Altar get a middle build stage (they went straight from rubble to finished).
  • Thieving: the people you steal from turn on you when you're caught (they point, or the guard levels his spear) and hold it until you can steal again.
  • The Goblin Chief, the Ogre Chieftain and the Plague King each have a second attack.
  • A trap that breaks jolts and flashes.
  • Potions fill their slot, and super potions come in a square gold-ringed bottle so you can tell them from the regular ones (the Super Combat Potion keeps its own). New empty vial to match.
  • New icons for the cowhide, deer hide and wolf hide, raw and cooked bird meat, Old Mossback, the deadfall trap and the enchanted splinter. The blood, death and soul runes match the other runes.
  • Prayers: Steady Focus and Quickened Reflexes are a bronze and a steel medallion (they were the same plain sword), and Deadeye and Ascendance are full emblems.
  • Achievement icons: Sinewstring, Smoke Signal and Charcoal Chef are redrawn so you can see them, and Soft Landing and Truffle Nose are solid like the rest.

Fixes

  • The first switch to Melee, Ranged or Magic after starting the game could freeze it for a moment while the combat art loaded. That art now loads in the background right after launch.

Under the hood

  • Saves carry over unchanged. No migration.
  • The input extension gained one read-only check, for whether a modifier key is held, so the hotkey chords work while another app has focus.
