Skills

One skill is active at a time, and every key press or click goes to it (Slayer is the exception: it trains from the kills your task names). Melee, Ranged and Magic are the styles you fight with; Attack, Strength, Defence and Hitpoints are trained by how you fight.

Gathering

WoodcuttingChop trees for logs. Steady, honest work, and now and then a bird's nest tumbles out of the canopy.MiningMine rocks for ores. Every so often the stone gives up a gem, and rarer things still for the patient.FishingCatch fish, from shrimp up to shark as your skill grows. Now and then something truly big takes the line.ThievingPick pockets and rob market stalls and chests for coins and goods. Fumble a steal and you're stunned for a moment. Production

SmithingSmelt ores into bars at the furnace, then forge those bars into tools and armor. Good gear starts here.CraftingCut gems into jewelry, saw logs into planks, spin flax into bowstring, sew robes. Quiet work that touches every other trade.CookingCook your raw catch over the fire. A good meal heals and sharpens you; a careless one burns.FletchingWhittle logs into bows, staves, and arrow shafts, and finish arrows with metal and feathers. An archer or a mage is only as good as the fletcher behind them.RunecraftWork rune essence into runes at the altars. Every spell ever cast began as a runecrafter's labor.HerbloreClean and name your herbs, then brew them into potions: keener attacks, tougher defence, steady prayer, cures for poison. A good stock of brews wins fights that steel alone cannot.PrayerBury or offer bones to train Prayer. Call on your prayers in a fight to sharpen your aim, strengthen your blows and harden your guard, or to shut out an enemy's style of attack completely.FiremakingSet your logs alight for the pure craft of the flame. The ash enriches a farmer's compost, and a pyre, once you call on it, blesses the next bones you bury.ConstructionPut your planks and nails to work furnishing your own Holding. Furniture can be built again and again, and some works serve you in the field for good: springs, wards, altars, a pantry, and new garden ground.

Combat

MeleeClose-quarters fighting, blade or maul in hand. An edge slashes, a maul crushes, and heavy armor fears the crush far more. Your stance sets what the fighting teaches: Attack, Strength, Defence, or a share of all three, with Hitpoints growing alongside.RangedBow and crossbow work: strike from a distance, and most of what you loose is gathered back after the kill. Your stance keeps the lesson for Ranged or shares part with Defence, and Hitpoints grows alongside.MagicSpellcasting: every cast spends runes from the bank, and a good staff makes the spells hit harder. Your stance keeps the lesson for Magic or shares part with Defence, and Hitpoints grows alongside.AttackHow true your blade swings. Fight in the Accurate stance to put every lesson into it, or let the Shared stance split the lesson with Strength and Defence.StrengthThe weight behind every blow, and whether you can even lift the heaviest gear. Fight in the Aggressive stance to put every lesson into it, or let the Shared stance split the lesson three ways.DefenceHow well you shrug off a hit, and what armor you may wear. It grows in the Defensive stance, the Shared stance, and the careful stances of the bow and the staff.HitpointsHow much punishment you can take: ten, and one more for every level. It grows on its own with every hit you land, whatever stance you fight in.
